You can’t read about the sex trade without reading about the scourge of human trafficking. Above all other criticisms of prostitution, this is the big one. Nothing makes people panic more than the idea that their daughter or sister or wife could be whisked away by masked foreigners and forced to fuck strangers for money in another country. The uptight can claim it leads to other crimes and disease and all that shit that maybe the stats don’t back up fully, but damn…human trafficking is rough. If it was real, anyway.

Turns out the Guardian paper in the UK just blew the lid off of the human trafficking bullshit powder keg they’d been sitting on for quite a while over there. The end result of a massive law enforcement investigation that including every single law enforcement agency in the entire country, special agencies and the government is that not one single person who ever forced anyone into the sex trade was found. Not one.

Despite politicians and media claiming thousands of people are brought into the country each and every year to be forced into a prostitution ( a claim echoed in the US, in Canada and in pretty much every Western nation), there’s actually little evidence it happens at all and it’s likely real numbers are extremely smaller than those tossed around in the media. The so called information comes from misquoted, misunderstood or completely fabricated sources. It’s sensationalism and piss poor journalism at its best.

As it happens, UK law enforcement originally claimed it had achieved a massive success in its bid to end human trafficking by making over 500 arrests. Once the Guardian got a hold of the official documentation, that number changed. Over 100 were clerical errors. They never really happened. That brought the number down to just over 400. About half of those arrested were women, few implicated in any kind of trafficking. 153 had been released even before the program was called a success, 106 with no charges filed and 47 for minor offenses. 73 were charged for immigration breaches, and 76 got hit with drug charges.

In the end, 96 people were arrested for trafficking, 67 were charged and 47 never made it to court. In fact, only 22 were prosecuted, including two women rescued as victims. 15 men and women were ultimately convicted, according to the program’s definition of trafficking, which includes transporting a sex worker who is willingly going along with you. 10 of the people convicted fell under this definition, and had forced no one into the sex trade. That leaves five people, two of whom were in prison months before the crackdown even began. The other three were convicted at the end of an investigation started in 2006, a year before the program began.

So in the end, no one was found to have been a human trafficker as the result of a massive, cross country sting operation that investigated over 800 brothels and other establishments, raiding sex workers and those who work with them. 5 people, over the span of a few years, were charged with real, legitimate trafficking. Is it a problem? Of course, in much the way supervillains are a problem. It’s real, but it’s not nearly as bad as the movies make it seem sometimes.

GENDER ISSUES: Andrea Waddell, a graduate of Durham University A 41-year-old man was charged today with the murder of a prostitute whose strangled body was found in a burned-out flat, police said.

Andrea Waddell’s body was found by firefighters in her first floor flat in Upper Lewes Road, Brighton, shortly before midnight last Thursday.

Neil McMillan, a satellite installer, of Bennett Road, Brighton, has also been charged with arson with intent to endanger life, Sussex Police said.

He was arrested on Saturday night and detectives were granted an extension to continue questioning him.

He will appear at Brighton Magistrates Court tomorrow.

Ms Waddell’s family has revealed she was born Alexander John, but underwent gender surgery to become a woman while studying for a masters degree at the University of Sussex.

She also studied at Durham University.

Her parents, Sonia and Robin, and brother Nick, said a number of health problems the 29-year-old suffered from made life very difficult and painful for her and she should not be judged for how she made a living.

It’s a job and should be treated as such.

Assume that some old guy gets horny and picks up a hooker. She then ejaculates, fellates, or otherwise sexually pleases him. For most young women, the prospect of drawing semen out of an old, wrinkly man (who probably smells like sweat and vodka) is revolting. Sure, some prostitutes deal with horny-but-attractive clients, but for the sake of argument let’s assume the client is repulsive.

If an old guy has a heart attack while with her, she goes to jail, and he goes to the hospital. In jail, the hooker is charged with prostitution. Back at the hospital, the old guy is assigned a nurse who will take care of him. She will shave his genitals, clean and wipe his butt, and insert a catheter into his penis. If, in the course of this procedure, the nurse ejaculates the man for medical reasons, she is still considered a worthwhile and decent part of our society. No crime committed. In fact, she is considered saintly for attending to the needs of an old man.

For two weeks of shaving pubic hair, administering catheters, and cleaning the feces out the man’s anus, the nurse would earn roughly what the prostitute earns in a single night. Yet both jobs deal intimately with the same man’s bodily fluids. Still, the prostitute (who is earning a hell of a lot more money) is usually dealing with only one fluid that is relatively clean. The feces, urine, puss, and mucous that the nurse deals with are, in my humble opinion, considerably worse. Yet she is paid far, far less. In a strictly fiscal sense, the nurse is getting ripped off.

The disparity is basically one of ethics. The prostitute is considered a criminal, where the nurse is not. In a best case scenario, religious folk look on the prostitute as the unwilling victim of a cruel and unjust society that drove her to prostitution. (There are also those that see prostitutes as ‘evil doers’ who should be stoned to death, but we usually find out that the men who advocate this stance also tend to frequent them when no one is looking).

Normally, in our “enlightened” age, the prostitute is considered ‘the victim’. Oddly enough, I couldn’t agree more.

Let there be no doubt: Abused, screwed up girls get into prostitution. They spend a lot their life freezing on street corners so they can get picked up by sleazy men who will pay them money for permission to spew un-nice bodily fluids all over them.

That said, there are also a lot of abused, screwed up girls who get into nursing as well. They spend their lives dealing with the same crude bodily fluids, and worse. Both careers (and many more like them) involve doing jobs are gross, disgusting, and vile.

Prostitution is a scummy, rotten job that you’ll probably get screwed over doing. Unfortunately, it is only one of many scummy jobs out there that people are resigned to. While the right wing expound endlessly and how bad the sex trade is for the girls who work in it, they totally ignore the fact that there are many, many jobs that are equally (if not more) demeaning, crude, and disgusting.

The truth is, life sucks. A lot of jobs that women get suck. If they’re not disgusting, they’re demeaning. If not demeaning, then they’re underpaid and under appreciated. There is nothing special about the misery many prostitutes feel with their work. There is, however, something unique about it: it is illegal. Unlike the nurse who works in a well-lit, sanitary environment, the prostitute is condemned to negotiate prices on dark curbsides with men they have never met; men who have never been screened or vetted.

Even the most ardent, right-wing Christian has to admit that prostitution will always be with us. They’ve tried for thousands of years to rid the world of the ‘evil’ of the world’s oldest profession, and they have failed. It’s time to at least recognize that, though they may feel the job is “sinful”, their own actions in restricting and criminalizing prostitution have resulted only in making a bad job worse.

If what they are really worried about is the care and morale of the women in this industry, they need to take a long, hard look at the effect they are having on the lives and futures of those who work the streets of every major city in the world.

Idiot Abbott applauds craigslist changes

Filed under HP's Word, economy, world-news by hoe-tell on 06-05-2009

angela-kay-baileyTexas Attorney General Greg Abbott applauded the recent decision in which craigslist said it would remove the “erotic services” category from its online offerings.

craigslist, an online classified ad service, offers visitors everything from links to regional job postings, service offerings, product sales and networking though it is not as good as BackPage

In a statement, the company confirmed that the “erotic services” category will no longer accept postings and in seven days the link will be removed.

A new category, called “adult services,” has been launched at the site, which will allow legal adult service providers to post content. Postings will be manually

reviewed before going live and will cost $10 per post until a poster is approved and allowed to distribute material for $5 per post, craigslist said.

Abbott said the move is needed for security and safety reasons.

“This is a win for the safety and security of all who may access craigslist — especially children,” Abbott said. “Making these changes is a step in the right direction, as craigslist must work to eliminate prostitution and other illegal conduct on its site. We will continue to monitor craigslist to ensure it establishes ongoing and meaningful safeguards.”

craigslist received national attention last month when allegations were made that a murder in Rhode Island was linked to the suspect’s use of craigslist. Since then, craigslist has said it has been unfairly criticized as a forum that causes violence. and worse off they work with police now.

Adrianna

Her working name is Adrianna, and she works at a massage studio in the city where I live. The first time I saw her, she was  48 (I’m 34) and very, very attractive. Giving her a massage gives me the chance to fully appreciate her beautiful figure, soft tan skin, and be able to have a quiet conversation with her. She tells me about the birthday party her three-year-old went to over the weekend and how poorly behaved the other parents acted in the part of town where she lives. I can only partially relate, since my three-year-old is sheltered in a wealthy community in suburbia(ex-wife married a doctor who she cheated on me with).

If Adrianna doesn’t enjoy the sex we have, she surely should get an

Academy Award. I’ve been with more than my fair share of prostitutes, both high priced ($500-plus) to streetwalker blowjobs ($20), and she is the best at making me feel that this was a mutually enjoyable session. Reflecting afterwards, I daydream about being the Richard Gere to her Pretty Woman. She is so easy going and pleasant without the rough edges (at least visible for an hour at a time) that I could see having my multi-millionaire lifestyle lavish her with love and affection.
